Selma attended the Ferndale Grade School and also the New Lisbon High School but did not graduate as she had to take care of her brother, Leonard.
Ferndale Grade School was a one-room school which was located about seven miles from the Johnson home, taking Co. S east to East Lemonweir Church, north on Wis. 80 to the town road, west and south on the town road to the school. Usually during the winter months the roads were not plowed so the children would take the Main Valley Trail.

OBITUARY - 1983
Selma Marie Martin, 74, of Elroy passed away on Friday August 26 at Fair View Nursing Home after a long illness. The daughter of Sarah (Gullickson) and Knute Johnson was born on April 17, 1909 in Fountain Township. She attended Ferndale School and New Lisbon High School.
She was united in marriage to Edward Richard Martin on November 24, 1928 at the East Lemonweir Lutheran parsonage. The couple farmed in Fountain Township from 1928 until 1980 when they moved to Elroy.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hustler.
Survivors include her husband, Edward; one son, Kerwin of Mukwonago; three brothers, Enoch J. of Mt. Morris, Hilbert of Elroy and Floyd of Wilmington, Ill. She is survived by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Elsmer and Theodore and by one sister, Hulda.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 29 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. A prayer service was held at the Hare Funeral Home, New Lisbon on Sunday afternoon. Rev. Donald Krause officiated at the services with burial in the Hustler Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Arthur Martin, Ellsworth Johnson, Robert Johnson, Wayne Johnson, and Gregory Johnson.

Miss Selma Johnson and Edward Martin United in Wedlock
Miss Selma, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Knute Johnson of the town of Fountain, this county, was united in marriage to Edward Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Martin of said town by Rev. C. Hjermsatd, at the East Lemonweir parsonage last Saturday afternoon. The ring ceremony was used. The attendants were Herman Martin and Miss Irma Wray (Ray). A reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents after the ceremony, and a five o’clock dinner was served. A very large number of friends and relatives were in attendance.
The bride attended the New Lisbon high school until the illness of a brother prevented her from continuing her studies. The groom is a farmer. They will live on his father’s farm, his parents having moved to Hustler. Both are very estimable young people. We join with their host of friends in extending congratulations and best wishes.

Their guests were as follows: Mr.a nd Mrs. Kerwin Martin and son, Scott of Mukwonago, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Batko and family of Lancaster, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Nelson, daughter and son of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Taylor and Duane and Mrs. Emma Rider of Baraboo, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Batko of Camp Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. John Hufchmidt of Kenosha, Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Martin, and Elsmere and Hilbert Johnson.
