Octor John Torbenson, born July 27, 1870, on a farm in Bergen Township, McLeod County, Minnesota. He was the son of Thomas Torbenson and Caroline Olson Torbenson. His parents moved to Renville County. Minnesota, and he grew up on a farm near Hector, Minnesota.
Alice Miller Torbenson, born February 15, 1878 in Big River, Pierce County, Wisconsin, daughter of Theodore F. Miller and Ann Teare Miller.
They both received their education at schools in or near Hector. Mother being one of the first graduates of Hector High School. Dad attended Wilmer Seminary in Wilmer, Minnesota.
They were married June 18, 1901 in Hector. They built a house and Dad managed a grain elevator there until September 19, 1904 when they moved to Fessenden, North Dakota to take over the management of a new elevator. Two of their children were born here, Florence Alice on April 10, 1905 and Grace Helen on September 23, 1906.
In May, 1908 Octor Torbenson and Willard F. Deming purchased both the machinery and elevator business from T. F. Miller (mother's father). The family moved to Plaza on July 9. 1908. We lived in the east end of Plaza. For the next ten years, Dad was busy in both businesses. The floor above the machinery business was a large hall. (we called it the "Opera House") where vaudeville shows and dances were held. During these years in Plaza I remember my folks having many good times.
Joyce Elizabeth was born on November 6, 1912 and the following February 20, 1913, our sister. Grace, died and was buried in the Plaza Cemetery. Thomas Theodore was born on March 4, 1917.
Both our parents were charter members of Laurel Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and Dad was a charter member of Plaza Masonic Lodge. Both later received their 50 year membership certificates in O.E.S. and Dad in the Masonic Lodge. Dad served several years on the School Board.
Later Dad purchased what we called the Leland Farm which was Northwest of Plaza and did some farming along with his businesses in town.
In 1918 we moved to a farm a half mile west of Plaza where my folks lived for the next twenty two years. During these years my Dad farmed many acres and with a Pioneer Tractor plowed or broke many acres, and thrashed many fields for himself and others.
The threshing machine and cook car moved from one farm to another. The cook car provided food for crews of 20 men. Then the drought years came and the depression.
In 1940 the folks moved to Coulee, North Dakota where Dad again was in the elevator business. In 1944 they moved to the West Coast to Everett, Washington, and later to McMinnville, Oregon and made their home with my sister, Joyce.
Dad passed away on September 12, 1957 and Mother on November 21, 1958. Both are buried McMinnville, Oregon.
Florence married Russell Woodmark in Bismarck, North Dakota. Both worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. They later moved to Seattle, Washington where Dwight, their son, was born. He died when he was 14 months old. Then they moved to Montana where their daughters, Marilyn Louise and Joan Dolores were born. They moved to Everett where they still reside.
Joyce Elizabeth graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver, Washington. In 1935 she went to Great Falls, Montana to work in the hospital. She married Martin Johnson on May 29, 1936. He died on October 20, 1941. She then moved to Seattle, Washington and later to Aberdeen, Washington. She married Ira Hufendick on December 24, 1943. They moved to McMinnville, Oregon and on August 9, 1954, Ira passed away. Joyce had a children's wear store in McMinnville. She died on September 12. 1970.
Thomas Theodore was married to Florence Coons on April 4, 1939. They had three boys.
