THOMAS REMEMBERS
Thora as remembered by her brother, Thomas.
"Thora's first husband was Gust Hooker. They came home from Eau Claire during the summer. My mother and I would go to Camp Douglas to meet their train. They'd bring good things to eat, such as smoked ham. We were always so glad to see them. Gust would help on the farm. One year they built a hog pen and chicken coop. I always liked Gust, who treated me very well. I was probably 10 or 11 years old when Gust died in his early 50's.

Thora then married a widower with at least three grown children. (Two beautiful daughters and a teen-aged son). He was a tailor, a large man. They would come home during the summer too, for a little while, but he didn't help on the farm. He liked to drink beer and would buy it by the case. He was a good fellow and I liked him. Thora's second husband's name was Hans Edegaard (most likely misspelled.). I would go to Eau Claire by train and stay with them a few days at a time.

My mother went to Eau Claire to stay awhile. I was to meet her in Camp Douglas, but she didn't get off the train. We later learned that just before her train got to Baraboo, in Portage, the conductor came around and looked at her ticket and discovered she was to have gotten off at Camp Douglas. She couldn't speak English and couldn't understand the conductor when he called off names of towns. She got off in Portage and spent the night with friends. Then got back on the train the next day and got off in Elroy. She got a ride home with neighbors and came walking down the hill when I saw her coming.

Thora and Hans lived together for quite some time. After he died, Thora was a widow for many years."

Thora was also remembered as an excellant seamstress.
